EAL

(English as an additional language or New to English)
All children need a developed grasp of English to be able to learn and enjoy the life of the school. As part of our commitment to ‘every child as an individual’ we ensure that those children who join our team with no English or gaps in their English are given the tools they need to succeed in their learning.

After all- they have already learnt one language fluently and deserve the chance to be equally successful in learning their second one!

Racing to English

Once a child’s band of fluency has been identified, we use the ‘Racing to English’ program to support them in moving through the remaining stages to secure confident, fluent spoken, read and written English.

First Language Assessments

Wherever possible we source an adult to do a first language assessment for children who arrive with English as their second language who are not yet proficient in English.

Within our school we have staff who speak a range of languages eg:

  • Russian
  • Serbian
  • Italian
  • Romanian
  • Polish
  • Urdu

Where we have a child join the school with a home language that is not represented in our staff body we work collaboratively with schools in the Leeds Learning Alliance to access staff from other settings that can complete the assessment in a wider range of ‘home’ languages.
